Descrición |
| Both Creative Light RF & FF softbox designs feature a removable interior diffuser, as well as an external diffuser. All Creative Light Softboxes are constructed with reinforced stitching, ensuring no light is lost through the seams. Also unique to Creative Light Softboxes is the use of all flexible steel rods rather than aluminum or fiberglass. The rigidity of steel maintains the shape of the softbox regardless of working conditions. Finally, rods are color coded to make assembly simple. Just match the color with the appropriate color-coded hole on the Creative Light Speed ring. Whether you are using a square, octagonal or rectangular softbox, set up is easy. The heat-resistant fabric is perfect with flash units of any power, or continuous lighting up to 500 watts. All Creative Light Softboxes come with a high-quality, soft-sided storage case. Softbox RF Creative Light RF softboxes offer a design that is perfectly even from edge to edge. However, the front diffuser is recessed from the edge of the softbox. This slight deviation from the FF profile permits the 2 inches at the end of the softbox to act as its own barndoors, effectively reducing the amount of spill. Of course, if the image requires even more control a complete set of Soft Grids are available for the most popular sizes for even further lighting control. |

Nota: if you read my 30x120 review you will find much of the same information in this review too, because both boxes suffer from the same design flaws.
Having used Elinchrom softboxes for some time I was looking for an alternative that offered grids and packed smaller for easier transportation. Therefore, I bought two creative light softboxes, the 90x120 being one of them. My reasoning was that creative light softboxes were a much better all around alternative with only one drawback, difficult to assemble. I was wrong.
Out of the box the 90x120 softbox is impressive. The material used is very strong and has mat quality finish. The rods look strong and the ends that connect to the speedring are beefy. That is in direct contrast to most other brands where the rods are thin and can't be distinguished from one end to the other.
Putting those rods together to assemble the box is where the problem becomes apparent. The rods have no sleeves to slide into. While connecting the rods to the speedring one has to also firmly press the rods into the fabric, making the process very difficult and time consuming. Other softboxes such as photoflex have internal sleeves that will hold the rods inside the fabric.
Assembly is also made hard by the extra heavy duty fabric. The fabric is just very hard, taking away from the flexibility needed to assemble the box. Lastly, since the box is a recessed front design installing the front diffuser takes more time than ff boxes such as the Elinchrom Rotalux.
Disassembling the box is also very hard for the same reasons. One has to lay the softbox flat on its face and press the speedring hard towards the ground while pulling hard to slip the rods out of the speedring. To my surprise after taking apart the box for few times two of the rods came out severely kinked and three rods lost their end caps. Now the raw metal grinds against the fabric.
Another problem that I did not expect was the size of the included bag. The bag is 36-38" longo, making it too big for most general lighting bags that are 36" longo. This is because the strong rods can't be broken in half. Other brands such as Photoflex use rods that can be broken in half when packing.
This softbox does not come across as a professionally designed product. There are too many little problems and design flaws to seriously consider such product. Dito isto, there is one more problem that is a deal breaker. This box has a very cool cast compared to my other boxes. By how much? 700 Kelvin degrees to be exact. Using Rosco 4900 CTO over the flash tube partially solves the color difference problem. But that is not the full extent of the problem. The other creative light box I bought (12x48) has a different color temperature, which pegs the question, does every creative light box comes in its own color temperature?
That is right there the deal breaker. Compared to photoflex or Elinchrom Creative light uses much better raw materials. Quality control and design however are far below. Just look at photoflex which offers breakable rods, rod sleeves, quick release latches, and properly fitting speedrings. Everything about Elinchrom and photoflex feels cheaper but functions much better. Not recommended. |
